Understanding Sexual Assault

By Clinical Mental Health Team

Sexual assault remains a widespread issue in our society, affecting individuals of all ages and backgrounds. It is an act of violence that violates the core principles of consent, respect, and human dignity. Addressing this issue requires raising awareness, empowering survivors, and fostering a culture of prevention and support.

Open conversations about consent, boundaries, and respect can help foster healthier interactions and safer communities.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 53% of women and more than 29% of men report experiencing contact sexual violence in their lifetime, most often by someone they know. Many incidents still go unreported due to fear, shame, or a lack of trust in the justice system.

The consequences of sexual assault are far-reaching. Survivors may experience depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicidal ideation, physical symptoms, and difficulties with trust and relationships. Talking openly about these impacts helps reduce stigma and creates space for survivors to seek support.

Open conversations about consent, boundaries, and respect can help foster healthier interactions and safer communities. By educating ourselves and others, we promote understanding, prevention, and a culture where sexual assault is not tolerated. Sharing information about available resources also encourages survivors to seek help and begin healing.
