Social Media Standards and Policies
This page outlines Kairos University Mental Health’s social media policies for our providers and clients. We want you to be well-informed on the benefits, limitations, and boundaries of social media. Please read our social media policies below to understand how we conduct ourselves on the Internet as mental health professionals, and how you can expect your therapist to respond to various interactions that may occur between you and your therapist on the Internet.
This policy explains how Kairos University Mental Health uses social media and electronic communication to protect your privacy, confidentiality, and the therapeutic relationship. If you have any questions, please discuss them with your therapist.
Friending and Following on Social Media
Our therapists will not follow a current or former client on any social media platform. Doing so can compromise your confidentiality and the privacy of our therapists. It may also blur the boundaries of a therapeutic relationship and therefore it is not in your best interest for you to friend your therapist. If there are things from your online life that you wish to share with your therapist, please bring them into your therapy session where they can be viewed and explored during therapy.
Some of our therapists may have a social media presence – blogs, Twitter accounts, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Should you choose to follow your therapist’s blog or Twitter account (and doing so is at your discretion alone) and your name is readily recognizable to your therapist, you and your therapist may briefly discuss the situation and its potential impact on your working relationship.
Interacting with your Therapist
Social media should never be used for therapeutic or clinical communication. Phone calls, text messages, and email may be used only when clinically appropriate or for administrative purposes. Email should never be used in an emergency or urgent situation, as we cannot guarantee that messages will be seen or answered promptly. Your therapist will discuss appropriate methods of communication with you as part of your care.
Business Review Sites
You may find your therapist listed on business review websites such as Healthgrades or Yelp. These listings are generally created automatically and should not be interpreted as a request for a review or testimonial.
While you are free to share your experiences publicly if you choose, your therapist cannot respond to online reviews, whether positive or negative, as doing so could compromise your confidentiality. If you have concerns about your care, we encourage you to discuss them directly with your therapist whenever possible.
Telemental Health
Our clinics provide secure teletherapy services using the HIPAA-compliant version of Zoom. Therapy sessions are never recorded without your knowledge and written consent. If recording is necessary for training, supervision, or other purposes, your therapist will explain the reason, obtain your written permission, and ensure that recordings are handled securely and deleted when no longer needed.
To protect the privacy of everyone in our clinic, clients may not make audio or video recordings of therapy sessions or record anywhere within the clinic without prior written permission.
