Managing Stress for Better Mental Health: A Caregiver and Adult Resource

By Clinical Mental Health Team

Stress is a common part of everyday life, and how we experience and respond to stress varies from person to person. The type and intensity of stressors we face are unique to our own lives and situations. Chronic stress can have significant effects on mental health, contributing to anxiety, depression, and other challenges. Understanding your personal stress levels is an important step in developing strategies to manage stress and promote overall well-being.

  1. Identify Your Stressors Awareness is the first step in managing stress. Take time to list the situations, responsibilities, or people that trigger stress in your life. Once identified, you can create a plan to minimize, manage, or diffuse these stressors.
  2. Develop Healthy Coping Mechanisms Many people already have strategies that help them cope. Consider incorporating activities such as exercise, spiritual practices, meaningful relationships, time in nature, or acts of service. Make these practices a regular part of your life to build resilience.
  3. Prioritize Self-Care Self-care is essential for mental health. Set aside time daily for activities that bring you joy—whether reading a book, going for a walk, or spending time with friends and family. Even a few minutes can make a meaningful difference.
  4. Practice Mindfulness Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment. Paying attention to your thoughts, emotions, and surroundings allows you to respond thoughtfully to situations instead of reacting impulsively.
  5. Ensure Adequate Sleep Sleep is foundational to mental health. Aim for 7–8 hours per night whenever possible. Quality sleep can improve mood, reduce stress, and support cognitive function.
  6. Seek Professional Support If stress feels overwhelming or is affecting your mental health, seek professional help. Medical providers and mental health professionals can help identify strategies, provide coping tools, and support your journey toward balance and well-being.

Taking Action
How you manage stress directly impacts your mental and emotional health. Be attentive to areas of tension in your life, and practice self-compassion as you navigate challenges. Noticing both the positives and difficulties allows you to make intentional choices that promote overall health and resilience.
