Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

By Benjamin Weins

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a widely recognized and effective approach for working with individuals and couples, particularly because it gets to the heart of what people are truly longing for, connection. At its core, EFT is not about fixing surface-level problems–it’s about understanding the deeper emotional patterns that drive those problems in the first place.

Many people come into therapy feeling stuck in cycles they don’t fully understand. Couples, for example, often find themselves having the same argument over and over again. One partner pursues, the other withdraws. One criticizes, the other shuts down. It can feel frustrating, confusing, and even hopeless. Emotionally Focused Therapy helps make sense of these patterns by slowing things down and uncovering the emotions underneath—fear, hurt, loneliness, and the need to feel safe and valued.

A key strength of EFT is its ability to normalize these experiences. Rather than viewing conflict as evidence that a relationship is broken, EFT frames it as an indication that important emotional needs are not being met. For example, anger may be understood as a response to disconnection, while withdrawal may serve as a way to protect against rejection. Recognizing these underlying dynamics can shift how individuals interpret and respond to one another.

In practice, EFT focuses on helping people identify and express these deeper emotions in a way that feels safe and constructive. This often leads to powerful moments where people feel truly seen and heard—sometimes for the first time in a long time. These moments can reshape how partners relate to each other, moving from cycles of blame and distance to patterns of openness and responsiveness.

EFT is grounded in the idea that we are wired for connection. Whether we realize it or not, our relationships play a central role in our emotional well-being. When those relationships feel secure, we are more resilient, more confident, and more at peace. When they feel uncertain or strained, it can impact nearly every area of life.

What makes EFT especially effective is that it doesn’t just offer insight—it creates lasting change. By helping people experience new ways of connecting in the therapy room, those changes begin to carry into everyday life.
