Forgiveness: Letting Go and Choosing Healing

By Clinical Mental Health Team

Moments in everyday life can offer unexpected reminders about resilience and release. Consider the image of a bird struggling against a strong wind—holding tightly to a branch that no longer provides stability, then finally choosing to move to a safer, more protective place. This simple scene reflects a familiar human experience: the tendency to cling to things that no longer support well-being.

People often hold tightly to past hurts, difficult memories, unhelpful patterns, or emotions that once served a purpose but no longer contribute to growth. What begins as a way to stay grounded can eventually become something that holds a person back. Even when these struggles are not the individual’s fault, the responsibility of caring for one’s own life and healing remains essential.

Forgiveness is one meaningful pathway toward healing. It does not ask anyone to forget or minimize what has happened. Instead, it offers the possibility of transforming the way painful experiences are remembered.

Henri Nouwen describes this tender shift in Bread for the Journey, “Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting. … Forgiveness changes the way we remember. It converts the curse to a blessing. … We no longer have to experience ourselves as the victims of events we had no control over.
Forgiveness allows us to claim our own power and not let these events destroy us; it enables them to become events that deepen the wisdom of our hearts. Forgiveness indeed heals memories.”

Healing often involves gently loosening the grip on what no longer serves, making space for clarity, wisdom, and renewed strength. While the process can be challenging, it is also profoundly freeing. Therapy provides a safe and compassionate space to be seen, heard, and supported while exploring areas of life that feel painful or overwhelming. It offers tools for discernment, emotional processing, and meaningful change.
